Science is an Education
St Paul's High School has teamed up with Norbrook Laboratories Ltd to give students a unique careers education.
Over 40 Year 13 Science and Maths students and parents attended a tailor-made careers event held at Norbrook's premises in Newry. The purpose of the event was to give students and parents an understanding of the type of careers available to people with a Science or Maths background in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
Mr Martin Murdock, Finance Director for Norbrook Laboratories Ltd spoke to the guests about the range of departments and types of jobs available: "As a world leader in the pharmaceuticals industry, Norbrook Laboratories Ltd has a significant need for suitably educated staff with science backgrounds that are eager to learn, take responsibility and have satisfaction in their work. Science is at the heart of the industry and straddles many of our departments from Research and Development, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Chemical Synthesis, Technical, all aspects of Engineering as well as playing a major role in our production activities. The variety of jobs within these departments is wide ranging from study directors, technicians and analysts through to production chemists and engineers to name a few. In addition, Norbrook offers excellent career progression and training opportunities which has seen many of our staff promoted through the company to management and senior management level."
St Paul's High School has a long association with Norbrook. Mr Oliver Mooney, Headmaster, St. Paul's commented: "Careers education is a very important part of the curriculum at St Paul's and we are delighted to have had such a unique, hands-on opportunity through Norbrook to promote Science and Maths careers to our students. As one of the biggest employers in Newry, Norbrook is at the forefront of providing career opportunities in Science and Maths. I have no doubt that our students have come away with a much clearer idea of the employment and further education paths open to them."
Claire Mc Geough a Year 13 pupil added: "The careers event at Norbrook was really interesting and gave me a better idea of what I can do with my Science education. Most people think that if you study Science, you are going to be a doctor, dentist or a vet but by visiting Norbrook, I now know that there are many more Science related job opportunities available to me. It has certainly given me something to think about."
Norbrook Laboratories Ltd employs over 1600 people over three sites in Newry. The company has a close association with St Paul's School, through the Norbrook Science Laboratory and work placement opportunities which many pupils have benefitted from.
