Norbrook Kenya has become the first Net Carbon Zero facility within the Norbrook group.

Norbrook has made positive strides across the group in reducing our waste, carbon outputs and in our resource stewardship. We continue to build on this progress while supporting our local communities. We were proud to highlight this work in the publication of our recent CSR report

Our team in Kenya have recently made a major step forward as the facility in Nairobi became the first Carbon Zero facility within the Norbrook group. This achievement was the result of a comprehensive and in-depth review to understand the carbon footprint of the activities at the facility and take measures to reduce, eliminate and offset the carbon.

Norbrook's Kenyan facility is diverse and encompasses a wide range of activities, including manufacturing, quality, warehousing and distribution. These activities produce carbon, which has the potential to negatively impact the local community and the wider environment.

The site is primarily powered by the Kenyan power grid, which generates electricity using hydro power and is a green source of energy. Due to power fluctuations across the national grid, the facility relies on a number of back-up energy supplies including electricity and a steam generation plant, both of which are fossil fuel powered.

A wide range of energy and carbon reduction projects are now in place to support improvements at the facility, such as stack emission testing, new power plant infrastructure, digital energy management, campaign manufacturing processes to reduce water usage, replacement of old lighting systems with more energy efficient lights, and tree planting projects.

Stephen Campbell, Africa Site Lead noted: "The journey to carbon zero at the Kenyan facility has been a great achievement by the team. We are looking forward to our environmental journey continuing and building on the success in the years to come. As a company we are proud to support the stove replacement projects across Africa, which are bringing a real difference to children’s health, local jobs and which are helping to reduce deforestation and protect forests for generations to come."

In addition to the carbon reduction initiatives, the site has supported a UN approved carbon off-setting project within the African community, which aim to save lives and reduce global carbon emissions. This has allowed Norbrook Kenya to become the first net Carbon Zero facility within the Norbrook group.
